What Is AI Visibility? A Guide for Small Businesses and Nonprofits
AI visibility is how often AI tools name your business when people ask for help. This guide explains how the tools pick a business, how to check yours, and what to fix first.
In short
AI visibility is how often AI tools name your business when people ask for help. The tools pick businesses with clear, correct and matching facts across the web. You can check your own visibility in about 15 minutes. Most first fixes use the website you have now.
What AI visibility means
People now ask AI tools for advice before they buy. They ask questions like "Who is a good plumber near me?" or "Which food banks in my city need volunteers?"
An AI tool does not show ten links. It writes one answer. That answer names a few businesses or organizations. AI visibility is how often your name is in that answer.
The main AI tools today are:
- ChatGPT, from OpenAI
- Gemini, from Google
- Google AI Overviews, the AI answers at the top of many Google searches
- Perplexity
- Microsoft Copilot
Why it matters now
BrightLocal surveyed 1,002 US adults for its Local Consumer Review Survey 2026. In 2026, 45% of them used ChatGPT or other AI tools for local business recommendations. In 2025, the figure was 6%.
In February 2024, Gartner predicted that traditional search engine volume would drop 25% by 2026. Gartner gave AI chat tools and virtual agents as the cause.
The result is simple. If an AI tool does not name you, many customers do not see you at all.
How AI tools pick a business
AI tools build answers from information they can find and trust. Each tool works a little differently. But most of them use the same types of sources:
- Your website. The tools read your pages, your services and your answers to common questions.
- Structured data. Structured data, also called schema markup, is code on your website. It states facts such as your business type, address, hours and services in a format that software can read.
- Business listings. These include Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Bing Places and local directories.
- Reviews. The tools look at how many reviews you have, how recent they are and what they say.
- Mentions. News stories, local guides and partner websites that name you add trust.
When these sources agree, the tool can name you with confidence. When they disagree, the tool can skip you or show wrong facts.
AEO, GEO and SEO: what each one does
| Term | Full name | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Search engine optimization | Rank your pages in the list of Google and Bing results. |
| AEO | Answer engine optimization | Make your content the direct answer that answer tools quote. |
| GEO | Generative engine optimization | Make AI tools mention and recommend your business in the answers they write. |
The three work together. A fast website with clear content helps all three.
How to check your AI visibility in 15 minutes
- Write five questions that a new customer asks before they choose a business like yours. Include your city or area.
- Ask each question in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. Also search each question in Google, and read the AI Overview if one shows.
- Record which businesses each tool names. Note your position if the tool names you.
- Ask each tool, "What do you know about [your business name]?"
- Compare the answers with your real hours, services, address and prices. Write down each wrong fact.
This gives you a simple baseline. Do the same test each month to see what changes.
Five fixes to start with
- Correct your listings. Make your name, address, phone and hours the same on every listing.
- Add structured data. Add LocalBusiness or NonprofitOrganization schema to your website. Add FAQ schema to your FAQ section.
- Answer real questions. Add a page or section that answers the five questions from your test. Put the answer in the first sentence.
- Get recent reviews. Ask happy customers for reviews each month. Reply to each review.
- Add an llms.txt file. An llms.txt file is a short text file on your website. It gives AI tools a plain summary of who you are and what you do.
When to get help
You can do these fixes yourself. Many owners do not have the time. Others want to know which fix brings the most leads first.
AGEO Agency does this work for small businesses and nonprofits. We start with a free AI visibility check. It shows what each AI tool says about you today, and the first three fixes we suggest.
