AI Search Visibility Audit: 50 Checks in Four Phases

Most websites are invisible to AI search for reasons that take an afternoon to fix. This is the full list: 50 checks, four phases, one score out of 100.

This article is adapted from AI Search Visibility Audit: 50 Checks in Four Phases by Victor Ramayrat, first published on AgentLedGTM.com on September 3, 2026.

In short

AI search visibility is not one task. It is 50 separate checks. Sort them by the effort each one takes, and start with the cheapest. Phases 1 and 2 hold 27 of the 50 checks and 54 of the 100 points. Most of that work takes hours or weeks, not a rebuild.

The cheapest fix is often one line

The cheapest reason to be absent from ChatGPT answers is one line in your robots.txt file. A security plugin added it. Nobody approved it. You can find it and remove it in about 15 minutes.

That fix often does not happen. The reason is not laziness. The request arrives as a vague instruction, such as "get us cited by ChatGPT". It has no boundary, no owner and no first task. So the team talks about a new website instead, because a new website at least has a clear shape.

Is "get us cited by ChatGPT" a task or a program?

It is a program. In September 2026, Kaleigh Moore made this point clearly. Getting cited by ChatGPT is standing work in three directions at the same time:

  • Measurement never stops. An AI answer changes from one session to the next. One screenshot proves nothing. You must ask the same questions in clean sessions, month after month.
  • The question set needs care. The questions must come from what customers say on calls and in emails, not from a brainstorm. The list goes out of date as your market changes.
  • Most of the work is not on your website. AI tools quote review sites, forums, roundups and other people's pages. That work needs people who do not report to you.

Even when you accept all of this, you cannot start on Monday. Knowing the size of the work does not tell you what to change first. What you need is a scope: a finite list of changes, each one testable, each one with an honest cost.

What are the four phases?

The audit sorts the 50 checks by lift. Lift is the effort and approval that a check needs. This order is more important than the checks themselves, because it shows what you can start without asking anyone.

PhaseLiftOwnerExample checkChecksPoints
1. Quick winsHoursOne personUnblock AI crawlers in robots.txt1326
2. Content workWeeksContent and PRPublish comparison and alternative pages1428
3. Structural workA quarterContent, web and analyticsRewrite key pages as answer first passages1224
4. RebuildA yearLeadershipExpose a live query interface such as MCP1122

Each check is worth 2 points. Fifty checks make a score out of 100.

  • Phase 1: Quick wins. Settings, files and profiles. No content changes. One person can finish it in one working day.
  • Phase 2: Content work. Edits to pages you already own, plus the work on other sites that earns citations.
  • Phase 3: Structural work. New systems, not new pages. Content, web and analytics must move together.
  • Phase 4: Rebuild. Changes to the website architecture and to how your team works. It needs a budget and a leader who supports it.

How much of the score is cheap?

More than half. Of the 50 checks, 27 are in the two cheapest phases. Those 27 checks carry 54 of the 100 points, for work that takes hours and weeks.

  • Phase 1 carries 26 points. Phase 2 carries 28 points.
  • Phase 3 carries 24 points. Phase 4 carries 22 points.
  • The cheapest check takes about 15 minutes. The longest check takes about 9 months.

Many teams work the list in the wrong order. They start the conversation at Phase 4, where the ideas are interesting and the timelines are long. Phase 1 stays untouched. A knowledge graph does not help a business whose robots.txt blocks the crawler that would read it.

Where do the 50 checks come from?

Forty checks start from a list that 1000startups published in July 2026. That list separates three kinds of work: what you can do today without content changes, what needs real content change, and what needs a rebuild. The audit keeps those 40 items. It rewrites each one as a check that you pass or fail, and it puts them in order of lift.

Ten more checks close gaps that the original list leaves open:

Added checkPhaseThe gap it closes
No cookie wall or login hides your content1A consent banner or paywall can show a crawler the wall instead of the page.
Fix crawl errors and broken links1Dead links and redirect loops waste the crawl.
Correct the wrong facts AI answers give about you1Tracking finds the error. This check traces it to the source page and fixes it there.
Publish comparison and alternative pages2You can own the "which option is best" question on your own site.
Publish your prices2A price behind a form cannot be quoted, so AI tools quote whoever published a number.
Format your answers for extraction2Tables, numbered steps and short definitions are easy to quote whole.
Write alt text and publish transcripts2Images and video need words before any tool can read them.
Fix crawl hygiene across the whole site3Speed, canonical URLs and redirect chains matter on every template, not only one page.
Open your documentation and support answers3Your support team writes your best answers. Behind a login, nobody can read them.
Publish a product feed to the agentic commerce protocols4AI assistants now complete purchases in the chat. Inclusion needs a feed and a checkout interface.

The comparison page and crawl hygiene checks follow an AEO checklist from Stackmatix. The product feed check follows a 2026 guide to agentic commerce protocols from Opascope. That guide covers the Agentic Commerce Protocol that ChatGPT uses and Google's Universal Commerce Protocol. This area changes fast, so read the current merchant documentation before you plan that work.

What does each phase ask of you?

A score out of 100 is a talking point. A score split by phase, with an owner and an honest cost for each phase, is a plan you can fund.

PhaseWhat it asks of youHow to start it
1One person for a day or a week.Do not wait for approval. Finish it first, so the next conversation starts from a better score.
2Steady time for content and outreach. Six of its checks are ongoing work, such as reviews and forums.Plan for standing time each month, not a one-time project.
3Content, web and analytics work together for about a quarter.Use your gains from Phases 1 and 2 as evidence.
4A budget and a leader who supports it for a year.Start it only after Phases 1 to 3. Before that, it is a wish, not a plan.

If you can fund only one job, fund measurement. Check 09 sets your baseline. Check 13 corrects what AI tools already get wrong about you. Check 36 makes AI referral traffic visible in your analytics, where most of it now shows as "Direct". Without these three checks, you cannot prove that the next work had an effect.

How do you run the audit?

  1. Open the AI Search Visibility Audit. It runs in your browser and needs no account.
  2. Answer each check: No, Partly or Yes. This takes about 12 minutes.
  3. Open "How to do this" on any check you are not sure about. Each one shows why it matters, five steps, a test for done and the common mistake.
  4. Read "Do these next". It ranks your open checks by points per day of work, so the cheap wins come first.
  5. Get your scorecard. It shows your score, every answer and the steps for your eight highest-return fixes.
  6. Run the audit again each quarter. Visibility decays when content gets old.

What do the grades mean?

ScoreGradeWhat it means
0 to 15InvisibleAI tools cannot read you, cannot verify you, or cannot find a reason to name you.
16 to 35TraceYou exist in the index and almost nowhere else.
36 to 55FindableCrawlers can read you, but little of your content is built to be quoted.
56 to 79QuotableYou show up in answers about your category.
80 to 100Cited by defaultAI answers can find you, read you and name you.

Common questions

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work that gets your business found, read and quoted by AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude. It overlaps with SEO on the technical side. The goal is different: you want to be quoted inside an answer, not only ranked in a list of links.

How is the audit scored?

The audit has 50 checks. Each check is worth 2 points, so the maximum is 100. Yes scores 2 points, Partly scores 1 point and No scores 0 points. The score maps to five grades, from Invisible to Cited by default at 80 points and above.

What should I do first?

Do Phase 1 first. Its 13 checks are settings, files and profiles, not content. One person can clear them in a working day. The fastest check takes about 15 minutes: remove a robots.txt rule that blocks AI crawlers.

Do I need a paid tool to measure AI visibility?

Not to start. Write 10 to 20 questions in the words your customers use. Ask them each month in a fresh session with memory and personalization off. Record if you were named, if you were linked, who else was named and which pages were cited.

Why does the audit order the phases by effort and not by impact?

You can know the effort before you start. You cannot know the impact in advance, because it depends on your market, your competitors and the AI tool. Ordering by effort lets you decide what to do this week without a ranking that nobody can prove.

How often should I run the audit?

Run it each quarter. AI answer engines favor recent content, and several checks are ongoing work. A freshness calendar with a named owner is one of the 50 checks for this reason.
